Psychontology : a portmanteau of “psychology” and “ontology.” It names the study or description of how psychological development changes the experienced mode of being a self. A psychontological stage is therefore not merely a change in beliefs, traits, or behavior, but a change in what the subject takes themselves to be. In Functional Enlightenment , the psychontological progression can be stated like this: The ego-body is the ordinary first-person sense of being an “I” inseparably identified with one particular animal body, personal history, needs, fears, and desires. The player character is the embodied personality as it begins to be understood as a role within Samsara rather than as the totality of the self. Initially it is largely continuous with the ego-body.
